Day 24 - Route 69 to Kamnik

Friday 20th July 2018

We leave Route 69 at 8:30am after a nice ham and eggs breakfast outside on the veranda of the bar. We are not charged for camping so it’s the cheapest night we ever had.

Our route today takes us west along the B69 through the rolling hills and into Kärnten. This is the German name for old Carinthia, a reminder of the Roman roots of many of the provincial names in this part of the world.
The first high point is up and over Soboth summit. Not high enough to be called a mountain pass but the road is a fast twisty and as we drop down on the south side and come out of the forest the views over the valley are breathtaking.

The Julian Alps of Slovenia are on the horizon.

Stunning views down The Valley with the Slovene mountains on the horizon

Next we cross into Slovenia on the Seeburg Sattel, a pass road that carries little traffic. There is a wonderful set of hairpins on the northern side as we climb up out of Austria.

The border post at the top is long abandoned. We park up for a few minutes much to Mick’s relief.
Brief halt at the abandoned border post on Seeburgsattel

We continue south into Slovenia and turn off before the busy town of Kranj to a historic old place called Kamnik. During the trip planning stage I made a note of the Pod Skalo hostel, bar and camping site. It is another beer haven with 61 different ales on the menu. It even has a few beers from Young’s brewery in Wandsworth, London and is now firmly on the list of good places to stay when in this part of the world.

Inside Pod Skalo and more motorcycle hanging. Seems to be a theme.

The camping place is neat and fuss free, and just a few metres from the busy beer palace.
