Day 5 Schurrenhof to Imst

Sunday 1st July 2018

Fortunately we remembered to put in an order for bread rolls and croissants yesterday so for once we have a decent breakfast before setting off from Schurrenhof.

It’s another beautiful day so again we have a sweaty ride as the sun beats down. Since we are heading for Greece we had better start acclimatising soon so it’s good training for things to come.

The Alps are soon dominating the horizon

We stick to main roads this time, we’ve had enough of autobahn traffic jams. The miles roll by as we head into Bavaria. As it is Sunday there are no shops open here in the catholic heartland of Germany.

The distant Alps appear on the horizon and soon we are approaching Austria and a lovely pass road called Hahntenjoch. We rode over here last year in the other direction. It is a wild and little travelled high pass though the Sunday bikers are out in force. As we climb the temperature drops rapidly and by the time we reach the summit it is decidedly chilly with a cold wind blowing at the summit where we stop for coffee and a few souvenir photos.

There are a number of passes to take you over from the German alps into Austria but I would certainly recommend the Hantennjoch route. Unlike the nearby Fernpass it is not used by big wagons and so is perfect for bikes.

I was here

And so was he

The southern descent is a narrow balcony road where caution is required on the tight bends.

The Joch leads down into the town of Imst on the River Inn, upstream from Innsbruck. The Tomtom has identified Camping Imst-West close to the centre of the town. It’s a lovely site with very modern facilities, everything spotless in the Austrian way.

In the evening we have pizza and pasta at a nearby Italian restaurant where we watch Croatia beat Denmark on penalties.
